Financial Skills for Life
Nuneaton & Bedworth CAB has received funding to help even more people to learn to budget, save and borrow wisely. The grants are part of an overall Citizens Advice Financial Skills for Life programme, sponsored by Prudential as key partner. Prudential initiated the Financial Skills for Life programme with Citizens Advice in 2002. Their substantial long-term support has enabled Citizens Advice to develop its financial capability work to the point where 80 bureaux are now involved.
The grants were announced at a special Citizens Advice Financial Capability reception held in the House of Commons, sponsored by Prudential. The new grants, £200,000 from the Friends of Provident Foundation and £100,000 from Abbey Charitable Trust, signify another step towards the charity's aim to have Financial capability services in all Citizens Advice Bureaux by 2010.
Citizen Advice is one of the largest voluntary organisations in the UK and the largest provider of free money advice. Financial Capability is a key tool in addressing the UK’s growing debt problem, with bureaux now dealing with over 1.25 million debt-related issues.
Key speaker at the Financial Capability reception was Ed Balls MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury. He said; “Citizens Advice are to be congratulated for the leadership and innovation they have demonstrated on this important agenda. To participate effectively in the modern economy people need to be able to access and use financial services with confidence. The work undertaken by Citizens Advice Bureaux both as part of the FSA led National Strategy for Financial Capability and through sponsored projects like Financial Skills for Life play an invaluable role in helping people raise their levels of financial understanding, particularly those from disadvantaged groups”.
